Hickory Run 5-31 thru 6-3-2020

Bright Sunday afternoon at Hawk Run pool. Didn't see the bow that was here last year but the brookies remain.
Hawk Run brookie
And, another
Then the last one was the biggest. This one was a good 8 inches.
Then I ventured to the pool on Hickory Run across from the old ranger station.
The fish here were also willing.
The following day I ventured up to Hickory Run. Didn't do too well on the first morning but the afternoon was much better.
I think I only had three in the morning. Maybe these brookies are late risers.
As the fish woke up, they were much more accomodating. Got one from here.
Small but nice.
This run accounted for two in the net and one or two that I missed.
Really nice fish. Colors were outstanding!
Each one was pretty in its own way.
Each one was pretty...until I mess up the focus of the pic.
As expected, the water was gin clear.
But in the afternoon they kept coming and I wasn't complaining.
None of the fish were really big but as long as they were hitting, who cares!
Probably one of the more scenic streams I fish. Really is beautiful
Water is a bit more tanic than I remember from past years but the fish don't seem to mind.
Another little one.
That fish was hiding under the log in this pic.
Nope, didn't catch a thing here. Why? Who knows. If I were a fish, I'd live here.
Or here.
Water crashing over rocks is sure to be well oxygenated and it has to carry a good bit of food.
But, no fish. Can't believe there are not fish here but I didn't get any.
So, if I can't get fish, at least I can get a couple pretty pictures.
Neat isn't it!
More of the same. A better photographer would have done this location justice.
But, I'm just a point and shoot kind of picture taker.
Like I said, in the afternoon the fish started to wake up.
I went to a different part of the stream and perhaps this location receives a bit less pressure because it's harder to access.
Deep holes seem to produce the darker fish.
Every one, a jewel.
And, all these fish were caught on dry flies. This is not the time for nymphs.
Yup, a fish was living right under the bushes.
This one was in the run in the next picture.
Yeah, right there. Everywhere a fish should be, there was one.
Nothing of any size but nice.
The close quarters made any kind of casting challenging. So, shorten up the leader and go to it.
And the rewards are there to be had.
Every once in a while there was a pool that allowed a bit of casting room. But getting too aggressive puts a fly in the trees.
Pretty fish, bad pic.
This was the last run I fished on Hickory. Sorry to leave this stream.
The next day I visited the Lehigh River. This spot was recommended because it might be nice for floating a dry. When I arrived there were bugs everywhere and…
This appeared to be the perfect spot. EXCEPT the fish were rising against the opposite bank well out of my casting range.
I saw good numbers of caddis, sulphurs and yellow stones along with a bunch of midges. Then, a rise that was within my range. I worked that fish for about 2 and…
And this is what it turned out to be. All that work for a chub. But, in all fairness it does count in International Fly Fishing Competition. Like they say, a…
The morning of my last day was spent on Mud Run. Haven't had much luck on this stream before (that was years ago) but my luck has changed...or the stream has.
I fished this one location for several hours and caught fish for the entire time.
I think I figured out my crappy pics. I'm in a hurry to get the line back on the water before the bite stops. Hence, out of focus pictures.
This is an ideal location for brook trout.
And some were really healthy. This one went almost 7 inches.
And another over 7.
Fishing each seam of each run proved productive.
A little fatty. Only about 5 inches but it has some girth.
I did get a bunch.
And they kept coming. Inbetween the fish were a bunch of misses.
The run on the left is especially deep in comparison to the remainder of the stream and pulling fish to a dry there proved challenging.
But, it could be done. This was to be the last fish I would get a Mud Run. Certainly not an unhappy experience!
